The Social Security Administration uses a five-step sequential evaluation process to determine if people are disabled. The court follows each step evaluating whether an individual has substantial gainful activity, medically determinable severe impairments, whether they meet a listing, whether they can perform their past relevant work, and whether there are any other jobs in the national economy they can perform on a full-time sustained basis without accommodation or assistance. In order to win a disability case, a claimant must successfully navigate the sequential evaluation process.
