Meet Leah Broeker

Leah Broeker is one of North Carolina’s most experienced disability lawyers, with over 30 years in practice. A Marquette University graduate who attended UNC Law School, she has practiced in Asheville, North Carolina for most of her career. Beyond disability work, she handles workers’ compensation cases and maintains a deep commitment to pro bono work, earning multiple awards for her community service.

Career Journey

Broeker’s path to disability law began unexpectedly. Inspired by LA Law at age 14, she initially dreamed of becoming a corporate lawyer in New York City. However, her trajectory changed after graduating from Marquette University with an English degree. Her first associate position with David Gant in Asheville introduced her to Social Security disability and workers’ compensation law. After four years, she established her own practice, finding fulfillment in helping clients navigate the disability process.

Hurricane Helene’s Impact

The devastating effects of Hurricane Helene on Western North Carolina caused unprecedented challenges. With damage estimates between $60-200 billion, the region faced complete communication blackouts – no phones, internet, or emergency services. Many clients lost homes, vehicles, and crucial documentation. The community struggled with washed-out roads, power outages, and limited access to basic services. The Social Security office, already understaffed, faced additional hurdles in processing claims and appeals.

Social Security Administration Challenges

The Social Security Administration faces significant operational challenges, including potential staff reductions of 7,000 people and office closures. In Western North Carolina, the closure of remote hearing sites particularly impacts rural communities. The Franklin office closure means some clients must travel 4-5 hours to attend hearings. Limited phone access and internet connectivity create additional barriers for low-income applicants.

Veterans’ Benefits

Asheville’s large VA campus serves a significant veteran population. Many veterans don’t realize they can receive both VA and Social Security disability benefits. Through partnerships with nonprofit agencies like NC Serves and Veterans Services of the Carolinas, Broeker helps veterans navigate these complex systems. Success stories often lead to referrals, particularly among Marine veterans who rely on word-of-mouth recommendations.

Personal Note

Beyond her legal practice, Broeker is a partner in Blacksmith Distillery, a family business in Loman, Missouri. Started to fulfill her father’s dream of producing his father’s corn whiskey recipe, the distillery has expanded from four initial products to eighteen, including various bourbons and specialty spirits. This venture provides a welcome contrast to her disability law practice and strengthens family bonds.
