Asthma

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell, producing extra mucus, making breathing difficult and causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.  People with asthma suffer from the condition all the time, but appear symptom-free until something irritates the lungs, causing what is known as an “asthma attack.”  For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and impacts their ability to attend work regularly.  Asthma can be disabling for both children and adults if not properly managed with medication.

Causes of Asthma and Preventions

Many different irritants trigger asthma attacks. Part of learning to control your asthma is to learn what triggers symptoms and attacks and avoiding those triggers as much as possible. Some of the common asthma triggers include the following:

  • smoke
  • dust mites
  • air pollution
  • cockroaches
  • pets
  • mold
  • chemical fumes
  • high humidity
  • cold, dry air
  • certain foods or food additives.

Asthma triggers that are present in the workplace can make sustaining work difficult over time.  Asthma attacks cause people to miss work and be off-task while at work.  Both absenteeism and poor work production can lead to termination and an inability to sustain competitive employment or disability.
